The Holland Festival 2010 opens in Royal Theatre Carre with a tribute to one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century: Oum Kalthoum. Kalthoum’s classic Arabic songs will be performed by the young singer Amal Maher, accompanied by Selim Sahab’s Orchestra. Oum Kalthoum, the Voice of the Arabic world, was world famous for her emotional range and unbridled power. Her songs are about love, longing, loss and deep sadness. Omar Sharif famously said of her: ‘She is born again every morning in the hearts of 120 million people. In the East a day without Oum Kalthoum would have no color.
