The Amazon, which is of the “Mattei” type conserved in the Capitoline Museums, is the model on which the Torlonia Amazon (today headless) is based, and, in turn, is the replica of a bronze original dating from 435 BC that was presented in the competition at Ephesus in honour of Artemis. The Capitoline Amazon, purchased by Pope Benedict XIV, was restored by Bartolomeo Cavaceppi, who added an ancient head to it (also reproduced in the Torlonia copy), but this was later substituted by another that was more appropriate to this type of sculpture. It was during the restoration that Cavaceppi made the Torlonia copy.
