About the artist: Theodore P. Hios (Sgt, USMC) (1908 – 1999)
Theodore “Theo” Hios was born in Greece and immigrated to the United States in 1929. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 14 December 1942 and trained as a photographer assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division. Hios saw action on Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his combat photography. After World War II, he enrolled at the Art Students League in New York and became a successful artist. He taught at the New School for Social Research from 1963 to 1994. Hios died in 1999.
