America, Being the Latest and Most Accurate Description of the New World

This first edition of John Ogilby’s America is one of the most comprehensive illustrated English accounts of the New World, featuring 51 double-page engraved views and maps, six full-page portraits, frontispiece, and 66 illustrations in the text. The work contains an extensive account of Maryland, one of the earliest views of New York City, and a series of folding maps of South America, New England, and Jamaica. Also included are scenes depicting Native American life, their confrontations with explorers, and illustrations of the surrounding flora and fauna.
Ogilby (also Ogelby, Oglivie) was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions. He also established Ireland's first theater on Dublin's Werburgh Street.
