The North American birds featured here are just a few of the seventy-six hand-colored engravings that accompany the descriptions in American Ornithology by Alexander Wilson (1766–1813). This beautiful set of books, published in Philadelphia from 1808 to 1825, was conceived by Wilson as “a collection of all our finest birds,” and is considered the first comprehensive work on American natural history.
