From the Catalogue of Official A.E.F. Photographs taken by the Signal Corps: "Men of the One hundred and thirty-second Infantry (formerly Second and Seventh Regiments Infantry, Illinois National Guard), Thirty-third Division, who drove the Germans out of Forges, can be seen drinking the Germans [sic] beer and smoking bis cigars. Near Forges, Meuse, France. October 4, 1918."

Typed on a white strip on the bottom of the photograph: "German trench evacuated near Forges France. Oct. 4, 1918."

Handwritten caption on the back of the photograph: "[cut-off words] trenches. Near Forges, Meuse, France / Oct 4 - 1918".
