Amphion

Artus Quellinus the Elder1655

Royal Palace Amsterdam

Royal Palace Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Netherlands

This relief shows Amphion singing and playing his lyre, with the walls of the city of Thebes under construction in the background. According to legend, Amphion played so beautifully that the stones glided into place of their own accord.

Additional information:
The beautiful sound of Amphion’s music brings unity and harmony when walls and buildings are being constructed. The laws of music produce harmonious sound, just as good civic laws produce a united and prosperous city. This relief on the theme of good governance is a pendant to the one showing Mercury, Argus and Io.
