Taranto, Italy

Depicted on one side of the amphora, attributed to the Darius Painter, is the killing of Atreus, king of Argos, by his brother Thyestes, flanked by Aegisthus, born of the incestuous union between Thyestes and his daughter Pelopia, who is depicted looking up to the sky; on the right, a winged Erinys personifies the Revenge that will be exacted by Atreus’ grandson Orestes. Depicted on the other side are representations of Dionysus surrounded by members of his thiasos (upper register), and a scene of conversation between men and women in a context of seduction (lower register).
