The portrayal of performing musicians which had been a favorite theme of Venetian and Lombard painters in the 16th century was given an inflection of sardonic realism when introduced in Rome by Caravaggio around 1600. Grammatica's lute player is clearly in the wake of Caravaggesque innovations.
