This painting, together with 'An Angel in Green with a Vielle' came from the same altarpiece as 'The Virgin of the Rocks' by Leonardo.

  • Artist Biography: Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis (or Preda) is recorded from 1482 when in the employment of Lodovico il Moro, Duke of Milan; in 1483 he was named in the contract for the Virgin of the Rocks (Leonardo NG 1093; he may have painted NG 1661) with his brother Evangelista (who died in 1490 or soon afterwards). From 1493 Giovanni Ambrogio worked for Emperor Maximilian I, and was strongly influenced by Leonardo.
