In aquatint prints can get tonal processes. Aquatint was invented in France in the 18th century and was in vogue all over Europe for many decades from the 1770's onwards. In England, it was especially favoured among the water colours, for the delicate tonal graduations and texture of an aquatint closely resembled an original water colouring painting.
