The arcades of St Mary Arches church date to the 12th century. During the late Middle Ages, the church was enlarged to the north and south sides but shortened at the east and west ends. It was severely damaged by a bombing raid on 4 May 1942 and was photographed by Margaret Tomlinson for the National Buildings Record in September 1942.
