This image depicts the ryōtei (high-class restaurant) judged the best in all of Edo: Yaozen. The image was printed in An Insider’s Guide to Popular Restaurants in Edo, written by Yaoya Zenjirō. Their recipes appear in the fourth book of the fourth volume and the image by Kuwagata Keisai (better known as Kitao Masayoshi) seen here features in the first volume.
