Design for an elaborate “Frisian horse”, an obstacle with protruding spikes. Frisian horses were mostly used for covering large expanses outside the fortress if enemy cavalry was expected, as temporary fortification of a weak point in one’s defences or patching up smaller breaches in the fortress made by the enemy. The most simple version of a Frisian horse was a cut-down tree with its branches sharpened into spikes.
