This is a painting of Isabelle ('Belle'), Duchess of Manchester. Here she is seen depicted as the goddess Diana, seated in a natural landscape, wearing a silk dress and leopard-skin cloak. The trappings from classical mythology make this portrait a good example of the eighteenth-century penchant for depicting female sitters in a kind of antique fancy dress.
