Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

A pupil of Tilman Riemenschneider, Franz Maidburg created this virtuoso sculpture for the tabernacle of Cologne Cathedral. It was begun around 1515 and highly praised by contemporaries (the structure was dismantled in 1766). Especially remarkable is Maidburg’s dynamic conception of the figure: the shoulders twist clockwise, whereas the head is turned in the opposite direction.

Documented in Freiberg from 1513, Maidburg worked for the Freiberg cathedral, the Annenkirche in Annaberg, the Benedictine monastery in Chemnitz, and in Komotau (Chomutov) in Bohemia. The attribution of the tabernacle in Cologne cathedral to Maidburg is not definitive.
