Since the 1950s, the Breyer Molding Company has produced figures of horses in several scales. The company began with the figure of a standing horse commissioned by the Mastercrafter Clock Company for the top of its wall clock. When the clockmaker could not pay for molding expenses, Breyer kept molds and sold the figures to the C. W. Woolworth Company. The western horse (called # 57) sold well, and Breyer went on to make many more horses and figures of other animals. In 1984, Reeves International bought Breyer Animal Creations and located the factory in New Jersey. These days, the company makes figures in resins and porcelains and produces about 300 unique figures each year. It caters to a enthusiastic market, offering not just figures but an annual collector book, an online collector club, and yearly Breyerfest conventions for collectors.
