Gyeongju-si, South Korea

This strange, imaginary animal, with the body of a tortoise and the head and tail of a dragon, sits perched atop a rounded pedestal. It resembles the black tortoise from the Mural of the Four Heavenly Deities in the ancient tombs of Goguryeo, and it was likely made for the special purpose of guarding the tomb. The body is hollow, with a funnel-shaped hole on the back and a spout protruding from the chest, so the pottery may have been used as a pitcher or other similar vessel.
