James Madison's Montpelier
Montpelier Station, United States

This full length portrait by Harrington Mann depicts Annie duPont, wife of William duPont and mother of Marion duPont Scott and William duPont Jr. Annie Rogers was born in 1858 to Theodore and Mary Rogers, members of a socially prominent Delaware family. Annie’s grandfather, Thomas Rogers, founded the Steam Locomotive & Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey. In 1892, after both Annie and William divorced their first spouses, the couple married and moved abroad; in 1902, the duPonts, along with children Marion and William Jr., relocated to Montpelier. Annie returned often to the family’s Hyde Park, London apartment, where she died in January 1927.

British artist Harrington Mann studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Academie Julien in Paris before opening a studio in New York. He is known principally for his portraits of children, including Marion and William duPont Jr.
