When a foreign ruler threatened to poach Beethoven from Vienna, three nobles joined forces to prevent this. Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz, Prince Ferdinand von Kinsky and Archduke Rudolf undertook to pay Beethoven a considerable sum each year - if only he would stay in Vienna. And since the contract did not oblige Beethoven to anything else, he accepted the offer.
