Cidade Matarazzo

Cidade Matarazzo
Sao Paulo, Brazil

Upon entering the installation, the visitor sees a rectangular rack of six chairs raised three meters off the ground and draped in flowing, white curtains to form a cramped enclosure. Inside the cubicle, a long cache of hanging light bulbs spills its light onto a plate containing the two halves of a sliced fig. The visitor can go inside this cubicle. The materials used remind the viewer of two states of the feminine: the erotic and the maternal, as symbolised by the uterine quality of the white fold formed by hospital curtains, the fragile fruit, the waiting-room chairs and the central lighting, which breathes life into the construct.
