In 2007, commissioned by the End of the World Biennale, Lucy + Jorge Orta travelled to Antarctica where they installed the ephemeral artwork Antarctic Village – No orders, an encampment of fifty dome-shaped dwellings, which has become a powerful symbol of a new world community. The village, which reflects the qualities of nomadic shelters, is constructed with a patchwork of materials: flags from countries around the world, fragments of clothes, and hand-made gloves symbolising the multiplicity and diversity of our identities.
