May 1956: Sir (Robert) Anthony Eden, the 1st Earl of Avon (1897 - 1977 ) the English statesman. He became an MP in 1923 and in 1940 was Winston Churchill's secretary of state for war. He was prime minister from 1955 to 1957 when he resigned owing to ill health.
