Mit dem Antikentempel schuf Carl von Gontard (1731–1791) 1768/69 einen Museumsbau für König Friedrich II. von Preußen (1712–1786), der zur Aufbewahrung einer Antikensammlung sowie einer Münzen- und Gemmensammlung diente. Seit 1921 wird der Antikentempel von der Hohenzollern-Familie als Mausoleum genutzt.
