Antoine-Laurent Jussieu (1748-1836), French botanist, studied medicine and botany in Paris under his uncle Bernard de Jussieu. His work formed the basis for the modern method of botanical classifications. Instrumental in the establishment of the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793, he selected every volume relating to natural history for its library. Jussieu was a member of the Académie des Sciences and professor at the museum until 1826, when his son, Adrien, succeeded him.
