Antonia Vetia mosaic

4th century AD

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica
Santiponce, Spain

Figurative polychrome mosaic belonging to a tomb of the 4th century AD.

It shows a young girl, probably the deceased, with a pigeon or doll on her lap. The scene is completed with candelabras on each side of the female figure, the cartela that informs us of the age and identity of the deceased (Antonia Vetia, ten years and nine months old), a field with flowers, a bird perched on a branch and finally a lamb, identified with the Agnus Dei, the lamb of God, a sign clearly Christian.

This mosaic was discovered during the excavations of the necropolis of "La Vegueta", Santiponce, in 1903. Today is exhibited at the Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla.
