Depicted wearing a solar crown, Gallien ruled jointly with his father, Valerian I, from 253-260 and solely from 260-268. Valerian divided the empire - Valerian ruling in the east and his son, the west. In 260, Valerian's military defeat at Edessa resulted in civil war and a takeover of the entire empire by Gallien.
