Portrait of António Xavier Trindade in his studio, circa 1933. In the same year, the artist moved with his family into their new house, Casa Bianca, Mahim. Soon after both his legs were amputated due to complications with diabetes. Until his last days, in 1935, Trindade kept on painting with the assistance of his daughter Ângela Trindade.
The encounter between Trindade and this Punjabi minstrel might have happened in a busy bazaar in the Bombay or a meeting place in the village anywhere in India. Like many other itinerant musicians, he made his way south of hometown to recite and perform Punjabi Sufi poetry as a livelihood.
