Ben Enwonwu (Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu, MBE; 14 July 1917 – 5 February 1994) was a Nigerian painter and sculptor widely regarded as one of the most influential African artists of the twentieth century. His pioneering career played a key role in shaping modern African art and increasing its visibility internationally during the colonial and postcolonial periods. Enwonwu was among the first African artists to gain widespread critical recognition, exhibiting in major venues in Europe and the United States and appearing in international directories of contemporary art. By the 1950s, he had gained global prominence, with international media often referring to him as “Africa’s Greatest Artist.” In Anyanwu, Enwonwu presents a graceful female figure standing upright with her arms outstretched toward the sky. The elongated body narrows toward the base, giving the sculpture a sense of upward movement and spiritual elevation. Subtle markings and stylized forms appear on the figure’s garments, adding texture and visual rhythm to the bronze surface.
The title Anyanwu is an Igbo word meaning “eye of the sun” or “eye of the rising sun.” The sculpture is often associated with the ideals of the Negritude movement, which celebrated African identity, culture, and self-determination. Enwonwu conceived the work as a symbol of cultural awakening and renewed pride in African heritage. The figure’s upward gesture evokes the rising sun—an image of illumination, vitality, and rebirth—while the brilliance of the sun itself suggests a beauty so radiant that it cannot be looked at directly.
