The Apalai-Wayana bast fiber mask from northern Brazil was worn by men at the Cumeeria celebration, the house ritual. The entire mask is made of palm leaf and strips of bark cloth. The “face” is formed out of wax and painted; the bark cloth strips are soaked in mud in order to gain their dark coloring.
