Apatosaurus

Vida Systems

Apatosaurus, a sauropod (long necked dinosaur), lived in what is now North America during the late Jurassic. It’s one of the largest terrestrial animals discovered so far. Fossils show that the bones of the apatosaurus were filled with air sacs, possibly the only way the dinosaur could have held up its massive neck. Due to its massive size scientists estimate a single apatosaurus needed to eat over 800 pounds / 363 kilos of vegetation a day. The tail of the apatosaurus was used in communication, as it moved the end of its tail like a whip and the sound was so loud that it probably broke the sound barrier. Scientists think that the apatosaurus needed to keep its head relatively parallel to the ground most of the time in order to maintain correct blood pressure. Apatosaurus measured 85 feet / 26 meters long, 15 feet /4.5 meters high at the hip, and weighed 18 tons /16 tonnes. Due to its massive size scientists estimate a single apatosaurus needed to eat over 800 pounds / 363 kilos of vegetation a day.
