The launch stand at LC 34 was the site of a tragic Apollo 1 cabin fire during a rehearsal test launch on January 27, 1967. Three astronauts, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee, were all killed in the inferno. The site is part of a National Historic Landmark listing, and numerous visitors and family members of the astronauts visit the complex as a memorial to the lives and to the deaths of these early space explorers.
