The diet of Apollo astronauts differed from the foods we enjoy on Earth in appearance, size, consistency, and method of preparation. Food was freeze-dried to remove moisture and reduce weight. It required the use of a special water gun tool to inject either hot or cold into the prepared package to rehydrate the food before consumption. In most cases, simply sucking it through a straw was the preferred method of ingestion, although food in zero gravity often ended in fun and games. Pictured at bottom right is a beef with vegetable meal flown on the Apollo 11 mission.
