Paul-Émile Colin was deeply influenced by his encounter with Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier, and Meijer de Haan in Le Pouldu in 1890. He also discovered the prints of Gauguin and Bernard at the Café Volpini, which had a lasting impact on his printmaking practice. In this self-portrait, he depicts himself facing the viewer, with a direct gaze, using hatching techniques reminiscent of Synthetist flat tints.
