Designed by William Morris in 1877, this wallpaper pattern combines apples and scrolling acanthus leaves against a background of foliage. The wallpaper was printed for Morris & Co. by the Islington based company Jeffrey & Co., who printed all of Morris & Co.'s wallpapers. The wallpaper required three woodblocks with a repeat size of 30.5 x 26.7 cm. This example was acquired directly from Morris and Co. in 1940 when the firm closed. The pattern number 'Apple 97' is written in blue crayon on the reverse. 'Apple' was also available in two other colourways; green, and brown and pink.
