Appliqué became a popular method for producing textiles with three-dimensional effects during the late 16th century and on into the 17th century. It was especially common in Spain and Italy, where it was used to create ornamental items for both secular and church use. This fabric features a rectangular pattern suited for a floral pattern, accented with a decorative floral border, flower in the middle, and corner flower patterns. A vivid three-dimensional effect is created through embroidered stitching decorative ribbons and outlined patterns. Plain satin is used for the outer fabric, with a muslin lining.
