Applique in gilded terracotta, depicting a griffin in the act of attacking a deer from behind. Similar decorations, organised in friezes containing multiple figures, were used for decorating wooden sarcophagi. The frieze included predators (lions, griffins) in the act of attacking their prey (deer, horses).
