The Scythians were originally a nomadic people who largely travelled around what is now Ukraine. The small Scythian kingdoms maintained trade relations with the Greek world. The small gold plate depicted here was probably attached to a garment: two holes have been pierced in it, above and below. It dates from the late 7th century BC, when Scythian art had not yet been influenced by Greek examples.
