The experience of emigrating from the island of the Dominican Republic to the island of Manhattan has informed Valdez’ work as it deals with identity and shifting cultural and social
influences. As he explains, “the social drama of migrations leaks out of my inner core.”
He has worked with painting, printmaking and mixed media in his career for which he has received international acclaim. Regarding his most recent work, he says it explores the sea as both a “blessing and a curse.”
