The National Museum in Krakow

The National Museum in Krakow
Kraków, Poland

This composition showing the stone walls of buildings, lit up by the bright sun, along a narrow street heading upwards, is part of a series of views which Abraham Neumann (1873-1942) painted while in the Near East in the years 1925-1927. He worked at that time as a lecturer at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, established in Jerusalem in 1906 by Baruch Schatz. This stay presented an artistic challenge to Neumann, allowing him to paint landscapes, lights, and perspectives which were exotic for him.
