Midway produced Tapper in 1983. In Tapper, players acted as a bartender serving beer to customers. When this game was deemed inappropriate for the youth-filled arcades, Midway released a nearly identical game called Root Beer Tapper. In the new game, the bartender is transformed into a soda jerk and the beer into soda pop. The objective of the game is to serve customers their drinks before they reach the end of one of the four bars. Cleaning up empty drinks and collecting tips is also imperative. As the game progresses, the player must tend to more customers at a quicker rate. The game's four levels each have a different setting: level one is western, level two is sports-themed, level three is a punk rock bar, and level four has an outer-space theme. Root Beer Tapper was ported to the ColecoVision, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Apple II, and IBM PC. It is also available on Midway Arcade Treasures for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and the PC, as well as on Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360.
