Released in 1974, Tank II was the first of two sequels to the highly successful game Tank, a military shooting game. It was manufactured by the secret Atari subsidiary Kee Games. By creating a controlled competitor, Atari was able to sell similar products from both companies to competing distributors. Tank, however, was not an Atari clone, but an original Kee Games production.
The game of Tank consists of two players directing a battle tank through a maze dotted with mines. The goal is to defeat the opponent by striking them with artillery shells while navigating the dangerous minefield. Tank was the first arcade video game to use a ROM chip. This chip stores graphic data providing space for more detailed graphics. The exciting sound effects and improved graphics helped make Tank the most popular game of 1974.
While the game's popularity ensured the production of spin-offs and sequels, like Tank II, it also ensured the survival of Atari. After a financially-disappointing year, Atari needed the funds from the success of Tank to recover their losses. Kee Games was revealed as an Atari creation and the companies were merged.
