In 1982, Taito released a unique new game called Zoo Keeper. The playful antics of Zoo Keeper involve a mischievous monkey, a zoo full of roaming animals, and root beer float bonuses. In Zoo Keeper, a monkey has kidnapped Zelda- the zookeeper's girlfriend- and released the zoo animals from their cages to divert Zeke- the zookeeper- from saving his girlfriend.
In Zoo Keeper, players guide Zeke through a series of levels and tasks. You are awarded bonus points for gathering bonus items- fruits, root beer floats, and ice cream sundaes- and capturing animals. On the first level, you must trap the loose zoo animals by enclosing them in a brick wall. As you build the wall around the animals, they fight to escape. A special net can be used to round up the escaping animals. The second level is a platform game. You must jump from platform-to-platform collecting bonus items and avoiding the coconuts thrown by the monkey kidnapper. When you reach the top platform, Zelda is released from her captor. The third level is a repeat of the first level, but with more and quicker animals. For the fourth level, players must jump over charging animals to reach the elevator. If you are able to transcend the animal-infested elevator, you earn a new zookeeper. The game starts over with increased difficulty, but now you have a fellow zookeeper to assist you.
Zoo Keeper is an exciting, colorful game that was a fun departure from the common shooting or maze games. Consequently, Zoo Keeper has become a sought-after game for arcade game collectors today. The game can now be found on the arcade classics collection Taito Legends for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PCs.
