Chicago constructed an elaborate funeral arch to receive the remains of President Abraham Lincoln. While a band played "The Lincoln Requiem," 36 schoolgirls dressed in white placed garlands of white roses atop the casket. At the time of Lincoln's death, there were 36 states.
