Casa Vicens was Gaudí’s first work. It was commissioned by a ceramics manufacturer and built between 1883 and 1885. The property was located on the road from Gràcia to Sant Gervasi, now the street known as Carrer de les Carolines.
An artificial waterfall, which cascaded off a parabolic arch, was built in the garden of Casa Vicens. Apart from being a decorative feature, the waterfall helped to cool the air in summer and generated a gentle breeze that entered the house.
