The Roman fortification Karataš–Diana is an archaeological site located on the right bank of Danube about 8 km upstream from Kladovo. It is situated at eastern end of the Djerdap Gorge at a point which, by the Roman inscription was called the Danube cataracts. Archaeological investigations of Diana started in 1964 and National Museum in Belgrade is still exploring this site so at the moment it has the largest excavated, conserved and presented area from all the Roman forts in this part of Danube Limes. Diana is established in early 1st century A.D., first stone fortification was built by Imperator Trajan around year 100. Major restoration works on strenghthening of the fort were conducted at the end of 3rd and beginning of 4th century. Diana and the rest of the Roman border on Danube was abandoned after invasion of Avars and Slavs in 6th – 7th century.
