Dating from the Late Jurassic period, Archaeopteryx is one of the oldest known birds. In common with the dromeosaur, it had pointed teeth, three clawed fingers and a long, stiff tail. Just like contemporary birds, its body was completely covered with feathers. Its wing feathers were asymmetrical (and hence perfectly suitable for active flight). It could also use its rearward-facing toe to grip the branches of trees.
