About the Work: Alexandre Arrechea left the Cuban art collective, Los Carpinteros, in the summer of 2003, to independently develop his own provocative art practice in continuity with the critical aesthetics of the group. His work analytically questions established power structures and systems of control, always relaying a critical position on the social and the political. Arrechea’s series Elementos arquitectónicos (Architectural Elements) captures a grueling relationship between a seemingly infinite stack of crumbling white bricks and the subjected human figure that is hidden behind it and made to bear its weight.
