In 2013, AFCP provided funding to preserve the Areni cave. The Areni cave is one of the most important Copper Age monuments in the Caucasus region. Most of the artifacts discovered here are unique and have no known equivalent elsewhere. Since the completion of the project, the site has become a destination for a series of researchers as well as tourists. The earliest-known human shoe, and brain tissue were discovered in this cave. The grantee worked with Czech scientists who were able to create a 3D model of a human head and face based on the skulls discovered in the cave. By creating a virtual tour of the cave and exposing the findings to larger and diverse communities of tourists, scientists, and the public, we will be able to highlight the significant investment of the USG to show the world that Areni is more than a small cave; it is a historic treasure chest. The shoe, the winery, the other unique items found here: each one provides the opportunity to look back in time and experience what life was like for our earliest ancestors.
