An architectural stone that has been inscribed "1795 le 23 de Juin." This date refers to the battle of Groix, a sea battle which tool place off the coast of Brittany. The French Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse was defeate by the British Channel Fleet. These French ships were captured - the Alexandre, the Formidable and the Tgire. The stone was probably inscribed by someone who was captured on one of these ships at the battle and subsequently interned at Portchester.
